Katherine Irish Henry - Artist Biography and Artist Statement

Skies whirl with the dance of reflected light and color. Skies touch the edges of deserts, oceans and mountains. As a sky watcher, I dream of vast spaces, one home dwarfed, the land made rough by fire, wind, and water.

Others suggest that I might paint subjects more political. But how do you change the very nature of your soul? I left New York knowing that I did not want to paint pain and anger.
I made a conscious decision to contribute beauty to the world and am in league with Turner and Luminist painters.

What fills your soul with joy and peace? Perhaps the lavender smell of wisteria, a cool breeze playfully stroking your cheek, a cloud as fine as angel hair, colored with shades of mauve, salmon, a strike of blue…

Nature is a window to a presence much larger than we are. Light teaches us about impermanence. My art points to being mindful of our experiences of life's beauty. I wonder.
If we filled our souls with appreciation for each moment, would violence be much less pervasive?

Katherine continues to find inspiration in New Mexico land and skyscapes; she depicts abstract patterns and beautiful layers of color that elicit inner experiences of beauty and spirituality.

Katherine utilizes museum quality pastel papers and finest quality pastels. She uses AR glass or acid free mats with UV protected glass when she frames. She currently exhibits at Convergence Gallery in Santa Fe and the Jezebel Gallery in Madrid. She is a signature member of the New Mexico Pastel Society and regularly participates in juried and invitational shows.
